Excel Keyboard Shortcuts

One of the main functions used in excel is to sum a column of numbers. There is a keyboard shortcut to
do that.

  • Simply click into the cell you want the total to appear, hold down the ALT key and press the
    equal sign key.

Do you want to select a row or column of numbers and don’t want to use the mouse?

  •  To select a column, simply click on a cell in that column, then hold down the CTRL key and press
    the space bar.
  • To select a row, simply click on a cell in that row, then hold down the SHIFT key and press the
    space bar.
  • Do both and the entire worksheet is selected

Do you want to quickly go to the beginning or end of a worksheet?

  • To go to the beginning, hold down the CTRL key and press the HOME key
  • To go to the end, hold down the CTRL key and press the END key

Do you want to quickly hide a column of data?

  • Hold down the CTRL key and press the number zero key and the column is hidden.
  • Unfortunately you cannot unhide a column with a shortcut

Do you want to quickly hide a row of data?

  • Hold down the CTRL key and press the number 9 key and the row is hidden
  • Hold down the CTRL key and the SHIFT key and press the number 9 key and the row is unhidden.

Do you need the current date in a cell?

  • Hold down the CTRL key and press the semicolon key.

Do you need the current time in a cell?

  • Hold down the CTRL key and the SHIFT key and press the semicolon key.

How about formulas? When you enter a formula in a cell and move on to another cell, the resulting value will appear in the cell. But suppose you want to check the formula? You can do this by selecting each cell and looking at the formula bar at the top of the screen. Or you can use this shortcut.

  • Hold down the CTRL key and press the TILDE key (this key looks like a wavy line ~ and is on the left side of the number row ). All formulas will show on the worksheet.
  • Use the same keys to revert back to normal view.

Do you have multiple excel files open and want to quickly switch from one to another?

  • Hold down the CTRL key and press the TAB key
